For those of us who don’t have a Samsung TV or mobile device like yours, the company’s TV Plus streaming service offerings have been a mystery – until now. It turns out that Samsung released a web version of its free, ad-supported TV Plus a few months agobut just didn’t tell a lot of people about it.
According to a new report in protocol, the web service for TV Plus appears to have had a soft launch in May. In addition to making TV Plus available to almost everyone, Samsung also updated its mobile app in July with the ability to project its streaming service onto Google Chromecast devices. Given the previously isolated nature of TV Plus, these moves represent the company’s big, if shy, moves into the free streaming war.
A Samsung spokesman told the outlet that TV Plus actually came on the market in the second quarter, but did not give a date.
Samsung TV Plus offers free live TV and linear programming, this is what traditional time-controlled television is called. The company explains on his website that the service does not require a subscription, introduce new fees or require a credit card. It’s not exactly new either. Samsung launched the service, which is similar to cable TV, in 2016. This gives users access to broadcast networks and TV Plus offers, Minutes noted.
US users can access around 170 channels from different genres, from news and game shows to gaming and reality TV. There’s even a channel with South Korean dramas called AsianCrush, which is my current bread and butter.
TV Plus is a hit with Samsung users, Executives said last yearthat accounts for billions of minutes every month. It’s one of the five most used apps on Samsung Smart TVs and has been featured on almost 50 million televisions worldwide.
Whether TV Plus will be a success with users outside of the Samsung ecosystem is an open question. It enters a crowded room with free competitors like Peacock, the Roku Channel, Pluto TV, and Tubi. While TV Plus’ channels are eye-catching, when I look at the list and look at all of the other services available, I remember how I felt when I was younger and walked into a Forever 21 store – overwhelmed , exhausted and happy to stick with what I have.
